They will, of course have heard much of this music, but in different formats. And the arrangements here (by such prestigious names as Jascha Heifetz and Nathan Milstein) present the music in a piquant new light which (apart from its own intrinsic value) makes one listen afresh to familiar pieces; take, for example, the march from The Love for Three Oranges arranged by Heifetz, which comes up as fresh as paint. Of course, it goes without saying that the enterprise would be stillborn if it were not delivered with such a combination of style, charm and panache by the team of Yuri Kalnits, violin, and Yulia Chaplina, piano, who have the full measure of the music and have collated a program which is both varied and ear-tickling. The generous playing time of over an hour means that the disc is probably not best listened to in toto — perhaps it would benefit from being heard in two half-hour sections to avoid aural fatigue. But this is a truly cherishable collection.

PROKOFIEV BY ARRANGEMENT: Music for the Stage and Keyboard arranged for violin and piano, Yuri Kalnits, violin, Yulia Chaplina, piano/TOCCATA This beguiling collection will be catnip to Prokofiev admirers who feel they’ve heard every note by the celebrated Russian composer. … Continue reading →

[3

post-1882","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-classical
["GET
