On Air has made available a trio of performances by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra<\/strong>.\u00a0 Conducted by Peter Breiner<\/strong>, all three performances feature compositions by Igor Stravinsky<\/strong> (1882-1971), the revolutionary composer responsible for one of the most vital and far-reaching movements of the last 100 years: Neo-Classicism.<\/p>\n

Recorded in stunning 4K UHD Dolby Vision<\/a> with Dolby Atmos<\/a> technologies, the three pieces performed are The Firebird<\/strong>, Petrushka<\/strong> and The Rite Of Spring<\/strong>.\u2018TheFirebird\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0 All three shows are available to watch On Demand after release. The Firebird<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0– a ballet and orchestral concert work first performed at the\u00a0Op\u00e9ra de Paris<\/a>\u00a0on 25 June 1910, The Firebird catapulted Stravinsky to international fame. Although designed as a work for the stage, with specific passages accompanying characters and action, the music has achieved equal, if not greater recognition, as a concert piece.<\/p>\n

Petrushka<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0– Stravinsky\u2019s second complete score for the Ballets Russes which followed the success of\u00a0The Firebird<\/em>, and premiered at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre du Ch\u00e2telet in Paris in 1911.\u00a0 His initial idea was for a concert piece for piano representing \u2018a puppet suddenly endowed with life, exasperating the patience of the orchestra with diabolical cascades of arpeggios\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Rite of Spring<\/em><\/strong> a ballet and orchestral concert work first performed at the\u00a0Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es<\/a>\u00a0on 29 May 1913.\u00a0 Containing many novel features for its time, including experiments in\u00a0tonality,\u00a0metre, rhythm,\u00a0stress\u00a0and\u00a0dissonance, the music achieved equal if not greater recognition as a concert piece and is widely considered to be one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century, and is one of the most recorded works in the classical repertoire.<\/p>\n

These classical performances follow on from On Air\u2019s inaugural classical music event in December 2020 – a livestream of Beethoven\u2019s<\/strong> 9th Symphony \u2013 and three-part classical series from 2021 which featured the final, sublime symphonies of Brahms<\/strong>, Dvo\u0159\u00e1k<\/strong> and Mozart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Conductor Peter Breiner concludes: \u201c<\/strong>One can hardly think of a better way to start an endeavour in classical music than these three Stravinsky\u2019s major works that form a foundation of every orchestra\u2019s repertoire. Collaboration of the brilliant RPO and top of the line producers resulted in a recording that is visually and aurally quite extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n
