The independent record label <strong>ECM<\/strong> \u2013 Edition of Contemporary Music \u2013 was founded by producer Manfred Eicher in 1969, and to date has issued more than 1700 albums spanning many idioms. Pioneering recordings of artists such as <strong>Keith Jarrett<\/strong>, <strong>Jan<\/strong> <strong>Garbarek<\/strong>, <strong>Chick<\/strong> <strong>Corea<\/strong>, <strong>Paul<\/strong> <strong>Bley<\/strong>, <strong>Egberto<\/strong> <strong>Gismonti<\/strong> and <strong>Pat<\/strong> <strong>Metheny<\/strong> established ECM\u2019s reputation as a jazz label to be reckoned with. By the late 1970s names such as <strong>Meredith<\/strong> <strong>Monk<\/strong> and <strong>Steve<\/strong> <strong>Reich<\/strong> regularly appeared in the ECM catalogue, and forty years ago in 1984 the company launched its <strong>New<\/strong> <strong>Series<\/strong> imprint, dedicated to notated music. The first record on the New Series was <strong>Arvo P\u00e4rt<\/strong>\u2019s \u2018<em>Tabula rasa<\/em>\u2019, which introduced a new soundworld to classical music listeners. ECM is known for its abiding relationships with its artists and for encouraging creative collaborations between them; indeed, the model of a literary publishing house was an inspiration for Eicher from the outset.<br \/>\nNew Series albums feature composers such as <strong>Gy\u00f6rgy<\/strong> <strong>Kurt\u00e1g<\/strong>, <strong>Valentin<\/strong> <strong>Silvestrov<\/strong>, <strong>Meredith<\/strong> <strong>Monk<\/strong> and <strong>Dobrinka<\/strong> <strong>Tabakova<\/strong>, and renowned interpreters such as <strong>Andr\u00e1s<\/strong> <strong>Schiff<\/strong>, the <strong>Hilliard<\/strong> <strong>Ensemble<\/strong>, <strong>Kim<\/strong> <strong>Kashkashian<\/strong>, <strong>Anja<\/strong> <strong>Lechner<\/strong> and the <strong>Danish<\/strong> <strong>String<\/strong> <strong>Quartet<\/strong>. The next generation of improvising artists are currently making waves on both sides of the Atlantic: <strong>Avishai<\/strong> <strong>Cohen<\/strong>, <strong>Tord<\/strong> <strong>Gustavsen<\/strong>, <strong>Mette Henriette<\/strong>, <strong>Vijay<\/strong> <strong>Iyer<\/strong> and <strong>Oded<\/strong> <strong>Tzur<\/strong> to name but a few. And legendary musicians such as <strong>John<\/strong> <strong>Surman<\/strong>, <strong>Gidon<\/strong> <strong>Kremer<\/strong> and <strong>Norma<\/strong> <strong>Winstone<\/strong> continue to release new albums on the label, decades after their first recordings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Naxos Music UK has taken on the physical distribution of\u00a0ECM Records &amp; ECM New Series in the UK and Ireland.
